Four quarters were not enough to decide second place in Region II-AA on Friday night.
The Broome Centurions would need overtime to finish off the Palmetto Mustangs.
After the Mustangs tied the game at 22 late in the fourth quarter, they lined up for a two-point conversion.
Despite allowing Palmetto to march down the field with a power running game, the Centurions’ defense did not budge and kept the game tied.
“We knew we were in a fight,” said Palmetto coach Jody LeCroy. “Defensively that’s their strong point, coming off the ball.”
With each team getting a possession on the opponent’s 10-yard line, Broome would once again need a big defensive stop. Cameron Lipscomb delivered with a fourth-down interception.
“We knew it would be tough for (the defense) but boy did they make a great play on the two-point conversion and the fourth down,” Broome coach Todd Staley said.
Instead of risking a turnover, Broome elected to go for the win with their first play in overtime. Tyler Massey was called on to kick the 27-yard game winning field goal.
“I’ve got all the confidence in the world in Tyler and our front up there,” Staley said. “The only worry we had was missing it going straight back on defense.”
Broome’s offense found first-half success with a pair of touchdowns (54 and 58 yards) from Chase Henry to Thomas Weeks. On both plays, Weeks was able to get well behind the defense and found himself wide open.
“(Weeks) is a great athlete. Not many people can keep up with him and he can outjump anybody,” Henry said.
Jovan Owens powered the Mustangs’ run game. He finished with 85 yards and two second-half touchdown runs.
“We made some plays and they made some big plays. In all it was a good high school football game,” LeCroy said.

When will ASD1 board wake up. Most everyone who has been involved with Palmetto over the last 10 years is aware of the problem. The problem is that when their child moves on and out of Palmetto they give up the fight (what fight) ASD1 has huge problems in sports and the kids pay the price.
Sooner or later it will happen. When the community has had its fill, heads will role.
Over the years PHS has had some pretty good athletes but we have had below avg. coaching on the balls fields. Most parents will not say anything because of the consequences that could occur. It's a sad situation.
Perhaps we could learn from our sister school Wren, who has seemingly turned the corner with their new Wren breaded head football coach, hint hint. But until our board wakes up, PHS will always be a loser.

same ole same ole. you had might as well save your breathe. you could not get Lecroy out of palmetto with the US govt, as long as Gary is top dog. just give it some time, when Mr Chapman leaves BHP as Superintendent, you might stand a chance. so until then you're screwed my friend

" In all it was a good high school football game" says Lecroy. How about saying "I'm sorry, once again I was outcoached or I didn't prepare my team!" The kids hate the coach and have no respect for him, parents and boosters are disgusted by his antics both on and off the field, and Mason sits idly by on his laurels doing nothing fix it. It is time AIM digs deep into the true sentiments of the players, parents, and fans and exposes this regime for what it really is - a joke! The kids work hard and deserve much better than what a $60K plus salery is buying these days.

I have to disagree with all the above. My kid plays sports at Palmetto. Yes there are some issues but they are at any school. We are 2A. We are more than likely going to lose to Wren and BPH. Get over it I did. We have good moral coachs here. They all care about the kids. I know for a fact that they do alot of things that no body knows about. This all goes back to the offense we run. When Tommy Davis was here the last fe years all I heard was the same things they are yelling about Coach Lecroy. We ran farnham off who later was to coach in the shrine bowl. Does Coach lecroy have some develpoment areas yes. Can they be fixed yes. From a athletic stand point he has done more to push to get our players what they need than any coach we have had. Most of the comments on here do not have kids playing anyway. Everyone needs to look in the mirror and search their hearts.
