ANDERSON COUNTY — Duke Energy will be closing its downtown payment center on Dec. 10, but will be opening five other locations in the Anderson area, a company spokesman said.
Four jobs contracted through Manpower will be eliminated.
The utility is changing administration of its payment centers and moving away from its old contract-employee centers, said Andy Thompson, a spokesman for Duke Energy.
The downtown payment center is at 200 Bleckley St., Thompson said.
“That’s … one of the last pay agent locations of that type (in the Anderson area),” he said.
A new firm, Global Express Financial Services, will be overseeing the new payment locations.
“We think it gives our customers greater flexibility, more hours of operation and will improve service to our customers,” Thompson said.
A rumor that 75 jobs would be lost in the Anderson area is just that, a rumor, he said.
“I don’t know where that came from,” he said.
The only personnel change is at the pay station, he said.
The new pay centers will open on Dec. 10. They are:
Anderson Quick Stop – 1723 Pearman Dairy Road; hours of operation: Monday – Saturday: 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., Sunday – 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
BP gas station – 4555 S.C. 81 North, Anderson; hours of operation: Monday – Sunday – 12 a.m. – 12 p.m.
B&B Sporting Goods – 2001 S. Main St., Anderson; hours of operation: Monday – Saturday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday – Closed
Whitehall Express – 704 Whitehall Road, Anderson; hours of operation: Monday – Sunday – 6 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Zeeks Country Store – 5629 U.S. 76, Pendleton; Monday – Sunday – 6 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Are these places charging a fee? If so that would be unfair!!!!!
I don't know how much I want to be making payments at my local gas station. Most people paying in person are paying with cash -- that's why they don't mail a check in the first place. What is the receipt process going to be? How are you going to prove you made your payment if it is somehow "lost?"
actually there should be no fee associated with paying @ those locations but... it'll take up to 5 days for a payment to be posted to a person's account, therefore if they are already at the brink of cut-off and make that payment the day before, their power will still be shut off because that payment will be in limbo for up to 5 days and if you choose to pay online @ duke-energy.com, it'll take up still take up to 5 days to post to a person's account. the only way to avoid payments not posting immediately is to sign up with the "western union" payment service on their website and yes, pay a small fee, in order to have a payment posted to your account immediately. certainly not fair! barely can afford the power bill now if we want our payments posted immediately, we'll have to pay a few dollars extra. check out their website for more details. the only other option is to risk mailing a check and hope that it arrives on time.

Why not just pay it online? I pay all of my bills online. Saves a lot of time and money!
