Traffic accidents kill three in Upstate

STORY TOOLS

Three Upstate residents have been killed after unrelated traffic accidents in Abbeville and Pickens counties in recent days.

A 70-year-old man was killed in an accident around 3 p.m. in Clemson on Thursday, according to a city of Clemson Police Department news release.

The driver of a green Lexus that was involved in the collision was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pickens County Coroner’s Office, according to the release.

The passenger in the Lexus and the driver of the burgundy Isuzu Ascondea that also was involved in the collision were transported for hospitalization, according to the release.

Officials of the Pickens County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol could not immediately be reached for further comment Thursday night.

In another case, around 5 p.m. Wednesday, a pickup truck reportedly entered U.S. 178 from a side road and was hit by a 2001 Honda motorcycle, according to the State Patrol.

The motorcycle’s operator, Wesley Travis Thomas, 24, of Lenoir City, Tenn., was ejected and taken to the Greenville Hospital System, where he died, according to a Pickens County Coroner’s Office news release.

State Patrol Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin said the motorcycle struck a pickup truck, driven by Timothy Tribble, 33, of Liberty, who failed to yield the right of way at North Old Pendleton Road and U.S. 178.

The driver of the motorcycle was unable to avoid a collision with the 1998 Chevrolet pickup, Gaskin said.

No charges would be filed, he said, until the accident investigation is completed by the State Patrol accident reconstruction team.

The second accident took place around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on S.C. 72 roughly 3 miles east of Calhoun Falls in Abbeville County.

Ronnie Ashley, Abbeville County coroner, said Jolly Watson, 62, of Calhoun Falls died at the scene from blunt trauma to his chest.

Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth of the Sate Patrol said Watson, the driver of a 1992 Pontiac, ran off the highway, overcorrected before running off the road into a ditch.

Watson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, Edgeworth said.

I'm sad to say that the second accident did not take place 3 miles east of Calhoun Falls, but about 300 yards from Calhoun Falls city limit sign. He was traveling on old 72 and ran out of the road at the intersection with highway 72.
