ANDERSON Two men pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Anderson Municipal Court to a “huffing” incident that happened roughly three months after another incident hospitalized both men with second-degree burns.
Recovered from burns in a flash fire caused in August by the huffing of computer cleaner in an unventilated car outside the Civic Center of Anderson, both men were back in the spotlight after Anderson police caught them Tuesday, according to authorities, sniffing compressed air.
The two homeless men each asked Wednesday for a trial by jury.
Brian Kelly, 19, and Todd Mellon, 35, were arrested at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in a parking lot at 1900 N. Main St. in Anderson, according to a police report.
Each is charged with two counts of using aromatic hydrocarbons and one count of possessing an open container.
In Anderson Municipal Court Wednesday, both men were ordered held in custody in lieu of $1,400 worth of property bonds until a trial date is set. Both men were in custody at the Anderson City Jail as of Friday afternoon, according to jail officials.
The men told Judge Hugh Welborn that they were living in a 2002 Subaru, which police said contained open bottles of liquor and multiple cans of compressed air, according to court testimony and the police report.
Kelly and Mellon, according to police, reportedly were huffing computer cleaner in a car from roughly five aerosol cans around 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28. The two were burned after one of the men attempted to light a cigarette inside the unventilated vehicle that was parked near the Civic Center of Anderson as the Great Southeast BalloonFest was happening, according to authorities.
Both men were taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., after the windows to their vehicle were blown out.
Mellon suffered second-degree burns to his hands, face, legs and neck. Kelly suffered second-degree burns to his chest, neck and face.
When police confronted the men, who according to authorities were “dazed and confused,” on Tuesday night, the two were found with a can of compressed air, according to the report.
“When I opened the driver's door, the driver took the can away from his mouth and began laughing,” Officer Barrett Ryan wrote in the report.
