Tigers trying to build on tournament title in home opener

STORY TOOLS

— At some point this season, Oliver Purnell hopes to win three basketball games in three days.

So while his Clemson basketball team wasn’t perfect in winning the inaugural Charleston Classic, its performance certainly gave Purnell a boost.

“If you win all three (games) you’re 3-0, it’s a shot of confidence down the line in this situation you’ll be in again, hopefully, when you get to postseason play in the ACC Tournament where you’ve got to play three straight nights in order to win the championship,” Purnell said Tuesday. “So it is an experience you can draw on when you win it and play extremely well, it’s something to build on from a confidence standpoint.”

Purnell hopes his team builds on that effort tonight in its home opener against Wofford. Clemson (3-0) faces the Terriers (0-1) at Littlejohn Coliseum in a game that tips off at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re looking for a tough ballgame in our home opener, yet at the same time we’re excited about being home,” he said. “It’ll be the first time we’ve had a chance to play (a regular season game) in front of our home fans since the Virginia Tech game last year, and we want to continue our love affair with the home fans, get off to a good start and set a tone.”

The Terriers, coached by Mike Young (a Purnell assistant at Radford) lost their season opener 62-59 at Dayton. They’re led by junior guard Junior Salters and sophomore forward Tim Johnson (who had a double-double at Dayton).

Two of the teams’ last three meetings have been decided by seven points or less, including a 62-60 Clemson win in 2005.

“It seems it’s a typical Wofford team that will give you fits if you’re not focused and ready,” Purnell said. “They play sagging man to man, dare you to shoot over the top, and if you struggle from outside you find yourself in a close ballgame.”

Reigning ACC Player of the Week Trevor Booker (who averaged 13 points, 13.7 rebounds and three blocks in Charleston) could be limited by a sprained ankle suffered Sunday in the title-game win over Temple. Purnell said Booker would be limited in practice Tuesday but “barring any complications” would be ready tonight.

Booker has been a key to the Tigers’ pressure defense, which limited Temple, TCU and Hofstra to a collective 66.3 points per game and 38 percent shooting percentage.

Our defense, to me, was the biggest factor in us winning the tournament,” Purnell said. “The cumulative factor was the most important thing, but we held teams to a very low shooting percentage, and that’s huge in terms of being able to outscore people.”
